Hail, Rock, Window:

On Tuesday of my first week, I had a fairly uneventful in the morning and afternoon. I was able to work the full day, and I got several meetings on video call without any internet issues. And then, Tonto and I experienced our first hail storm in the camper. Consequently, the hail started and lasted through my last meeting of the day, and was incredibly loud.

Right as I was ending my work day, my camp neighbors knocked on my door with their son. They told me that the kiddos (between 8-10yrs old) were throwing hail at each other. The son picked up a rock by accident. He threw it at his brother. Thankfully, missed his brother, and hit my front driver’s side window. My window was shattered with nearly no visibility.

The only thing holding it together was the aftermarket tinting on my car windows. Of course, they had him apologize and offered to pay for the window. I thanked them for bringing it to my attention. Then, reassured the boy that he did the right thing my bringing it to me and taking responsibility for his actions. As a strong believer that angry in situations like this is usually misplaced and unnecessary, I tried by best to demonstrate kindness and understanding. I was frustrated; don’t get me wrong.

It was easy to get a quote and booked an appointment for someone to come out to me Friday that week to fix it. Then, a day later, I realized it was supposed to storm all day on Friday, and the repair place said they would have to cancel if it was raining too much. The decision to drive to the nearest glass repair shop (Safelite AutoGlass) on Friday to ensure the work could be done was made.

Happy Birthday to Me:

Friday (my birthday) ended up being a series of unfortunate events. I took a half day at work, and set off on the drive.

About 30 minutes into the drive, the broken window slid down into the door frame by about an inch and a half. This wasn’t a terrible problem until about 10 minutes later. Next, the broken window started to bow out from the door frame as the wind was catching it. Tiny pieces of glass started to break off and fall into the car and on me while I was driving. It was terrifying.

With my left hand I gripped the broken window and pulled it back in line with the door frame. I had to hold it like that for about an hour, until I got to the nearest town where I found a Menards. Duct tape was purchased to tape the window for support. I also taped the window to the door frame, so the window could not break it further. The final hour drive to Duluth was thankfully uneventful.

I stopped at the post office to mail a baby blanket I made for a friend who is due to pop any day now. After that, I hightailed it over to the glass repair shop.

Cheer to 33:

Once I arrived, the window was replaced quickly, and I got back to camp with little fanfare. In the end, I was exhausted, both physically and emotionally, after that day. I’m pretty sure I was in bed by 9pm.

Don’t feel to bad for me. I ended up eating a small piece of birthday cake for breakfast the next day. Breakfast of champions!
